My goals are not subtle. 

I want to dismantle inherited myths. I want to: 

• Destroy fascism

• Combat ignorance

• Manifest diversity

• Embarrass the plutocracy

• Celebrate the human body

• Provoke criticism

Comedy is my weapon. Absurdity is my delivery system. I write plays that lie to the audience at first, then change the rules while they’re still trusting me. Confusion is the brand. Comfort is a deception.

I’m drawn to theatre that refuses reassurance. I love jokes that fail on purpose and silences that contuse. I love scenes that won't commit to whether they’re sincere or ridiculous and refuse to resolve the tension. I use humor to sharpen critique and redirect it toward the audience. I crave laughter that draws people into complicity, turns uneasy, and then makes them conscious of their place in the room. 

I believe we are less in control than we think, and we lie to ourselves about it to survive. I believe theatre grants us control. I believe theatre grants us the power to change. I'm fluent in change. I've rebuilt myself more than once. Yet I’m not interested in mining trauma for pity or credibility. I’ve already paid for it. What remains is urgency. I know exactly what the stakes are. I want the next thing that will scare me.

Biography

Alexander Ameen is a San Diego-based playwright, actor, and military veteran. His plays have been presented throughout Southern California. Affected Place, developed through the Veterans Playwriting Workshop at La Jolla Playhouse, was a 2026 Pegasus PlayLab finalist. God is a Sex Worker in Tampa, Florida was given a staged reading at OnStage Playhouse, and his political satire Corporate Deregulation received a staged reading as part of The Old Globe’s Powers New Voices Festival. His short plays have appeared in Arkana and Qu Literary Magazine. 

He served as a journalist and photographer in the U.S. Navy, and is a co-founder of Frontlines of Pride, a playwriting program serving LGBTQIA+ veterans and military-connected artists in partnership with Diversionary Theatre and Armed Services Arts Partnership. 

He has an M.A. in Theatre Arts and a B.S. in Television, Film, and New Media Production, both from San Diego State University. He also studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. He is currently enrolled in the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, the University of Iowa’s three-year MFA program in playwriting, where he was awarded the Iowa Arts Fellowship. He's a proud member of the Dramatists Guild.
